Biomechanics - What's it all about and what does it involve?

The way the rider sits on the horse will have a dramatic effect on its soundness, performance and development. These rider analysis sessions are designed for riders of all levels to help improve the rider's position and horse's way of going.

With the use of high speed video cameras (capturing 20 x faster than the human eye), Visualise training jackets and Quintic software the rider's position and horse's way of going can be constructively analysed.
Russell, who carries out the analysis, is a keen rider himself and has worked all over the world helping riders improve their position and horse's performance. Russell's passion and easy going character will put you at ease and ensure you get the best possible results out of the session.
This clinic really is a must for riders of all disciplines. See BBC interview below with Clare Balding at Burghley where Russell was working with Imogen Murray:

What is Cavaletti Training and how can it help your dressage?

Pole and cavaletti training fosters suppleness, rhythm, increased concentration and impulsion!
Cavalleti training is a great way to help strengthen muscles and improves the basic gait, it enhances a horse's natural moment by developing rhythm, power, expression and cadence through engaged steps over obstacles.
Riding over cavalletti helps train horses to asses' distances that in turn enhance balance. When the level of difficulty is increased systematically, horses' reactions and skills improve significantly. In addition, cavalletti work trains the riders seat and gives them better feeling for the horse. Why not give it a go!

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Goodbye BYRDS hello BD Youth!

Earlier in 2017 BYRDS Director Claire Moir unveiled her plans for BD Youth. Here are the key facts, changes and new opportunities for Welsh BD Youth Riders:

  • Renaming BYRDS to BD Youth - There were a few objections to the renaming but this has been carefully considered so that we align with other mainstream sports such as football, rugby and gymnastics (as well as the FEI and other Olympic Disciplines). – Going forwards there will be age specific categories (i.e. Under 25, Under 21, Under 18, Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12) and it's anticipated these will be more commonly used by the members, again similar to other sports.
  • There will be a new B+ level squad
  • New Foundation Academy programme will be created – Aimed at B and A squad riders. More news on these later in the year. In Wales we have piloted theses with our Elite Camps.
  • The Young Professionals Programme will have a revamp in 2018
  • Further development of the AASE programme
  • Focus on Stable Management. A potential collaboration with Pony Club to use their horsemanship tests alongside squads will NOT go ahead. – Following feedback from members and stakeholders plus a comprehensive peer review by the regional teams, it has been decided not to proceed with the proposal to use Pony Club horsemanship tests and instead develop our own.
